The American multinational technology company IBM has released a new version of their Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The current version, known as SPSS Amos v22-EQUiNOX, includes some significant changes in how users work with data. If you're considering downloading this latest release of IBM's SPSS Amos software, there are some important things that you should know about the changes before you do. The following list of changes is based on an IBM document called "Amos 22 Release Notes" which you can find here. These are some of the main features in Amoss v22-EQUiNOX:
Following the retirement of the Amos Developer, IBM has released only two new releases (v21.1.1 and v22) since 2004; see also SPSS Inc.'s Entry for Amos Developer Retired (retrieved 9 Jan 2007). Moreover, while IBM continues to support all v21 releases (including v20.x), support for v22 appears to be limited to situations where v22 was used to develop models in earlier versions of Amos; see also this discussion.
The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) is a data analysis tool that allows the user to run and report on statistical analyses. SPSS is produced and distributed by IBM and was formerly known as SPSS Version 12, SPSS Statistics Version 18, SPSS 13, and many other names. It has been developed since 1968 by an organization of social scientists who wanted to share statistical software at a time when such sharing was uncommon. The software is available for both Microsoft Windows and GNU/Linux operating systems.
IBM also provides a User's Guide in PDF format which contains information about the application programs for each version of the software. Amos was initially written by James H. Wilkinson, who remains the principal author of both the user interface and the underlying algorithms. The Amos project is funded by grants from both the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA). The project is headed by James H. Wilkinson at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida.
IBM's SPSS-Amos software has been used in all branches of industry since its introduction in 1979, when it was called SPSS-X for MS-DOS computers. The original problems that Amos was designed to address are still relevant: the nature and extent of the correlation between risk and outcome, and the relationships among these variables within populations. The software extends SPSS for Windows and SPSS-X to handle risk level data. Amos also handles continuous data, both nominal and ordinal, as well as numeric data with missing values or other non-numeric items such as 0/1. For those who want to explore models using Amos for statistical analysis such as regression analysis, factor analysis, discriminant analysis, multivariate ANOVA (MANOVA) and path analysis, see "Model Development".
